Sunday 18 May

Christ the King: Paul's Letter to the Colossians. Part 4. Colossians 2:6-15

Read Colossians 2:6-15

  • What stands out to you?
  • What do you notice?
  • What surprises you or grabs you?

*Genesis 17:9-14 explains that circumcision is a sign of the covenant God made with Abraham. Paul uses this as a metaphor for the way that Christ removes from us the sinful nature and gives us a new nature. The new sign of the new covenant is a changed life.

Consider:

Paul contrasts empty arguments and ideas with the fullness that Christ brings. In our generation, there are countless self-help and self-improvement approaches.

  • In what areas of our lives can these be helpful?
  • From what Paul describes Christ doing for us through the cross in v. 13-15, can self-help help us in these areas?
  • What power(s) and authority does Paul identify in this week’s passage?
  • Where do we feature?
  • What kind of power do we need?
  • What does it mean to ‘live your life in Jesus’ and to be ‘rooted and built up in Him’ (v.2:6-7)?
  • What does this mean for our identity and our understanding of the world?

Act: Take some time this week to acknowledge the freedom that Christ has purchased for you. Perhaps you might want to write down the things that you have done wrong or that have brought you shame in the past, and then burn or otherwise destroy them, acting out verses 13-14 to help reinforce your freedom from those things. Also: this might be a good time to ask people to consider baptism.
